FALCONS BEAT BEARS 3-2
March 11, 2009 - The Springfield Falcons faced a giant challenge at the Giant Center in Hershey, PA on Wednesday night as they were looking to snap a six-game losing streak against one of the AHL's best teams. By the end of the night, the Falcons pulled off one of their best efforts of the season beating the Hershey Bears 3-2 in a shootout. The Falcons used goals from Shane Willis, Gilbert Brule, and Charles Linglet in the shootout, while goaltender Devan Dubnyk stopped three of four shooters in the extra session.
FALCONS AUDIO - Head Coach Rob Daum Recaps The Win
"We have been stressing to the guys to find a way to win and we found a way tonight," said Falcons head coach Rob Daum. "We knew it was going to be a challenge and we talked about that before the game, and it worked out well for us. We will now try to carry this momentum into the weekend and build off this win."
It appeared Springfield would have the game-winner late in the third period when Ryan Potulny tipped home Ryan Constant's wrist shot from the left point giving Springfield a 2-1 lead at 13:35 of the final period, but Hershey's Andrew Gordon tied the score just 24-seconds after Potulny's goal tying the score at 2-2.
"Ryan (Potulny) has been very consistent for this team all year and he made a nice play to put us ahead," said Daum.
The Falcons started fast and furious as Brule opened the scoring for Springfield with a power play goal at 1:44 of the first period. The Falcons had an opportunity to expand their lead before the opening frame was over when they went on a brief five-on-three advantage late in the first period, but failed to convert.
Springfield would take their one-goal lead into the second period, but it would be short lived. Hershey's Alexandre Giroux fired a slap shot past Dubnyk just 43-seconds into the middle frame tying the score at 1-1 through 40 minutes of play.
