COLUMBUS PROSPECTS START WITH 7-3 WIN
Traverse City, Michigan – The Columbus Blue Jackets Prospects started the 2011 Prospect Tournament in style beating the Detroit Red Wings 7-3 on Saturday night. Tomas Kubalik led the attack with two goals and one assist, while goaltender Allen York stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced.
Joining Kubalik in the offensive explosion on Saturday were Ryan Johansen (one goal, one assist), David Savard (one goal, one assist), Dalton Prout (one goal, one assist) and Cam Atkinson (two assists), who all recorded two-point nights. The Blue Jackets next get ready to take on the Buffalo Sabres in day two of the tournament on Sunday.
“Overall, it was a great team win,” said Springfield Falcons head coach Rob Riley, who along with assistant coaches Brad Larsen and Nolan Pratt, is leading the Columbus Prospects behind the bench for the tournament. “I thought Allen York was strong when the game was on the line, and our top line had a strong second period. We will now get ready for Buffalo on Sunday.”
With Detroit nursing a 2-1 lead heading into the second period, Columbus took control of the game with three goals in the first 6:28 of the middle stanza. Savard tied the game at 2-2 just 1:01 into the second period, followed by Johansen giving the Blue Jackets a 3-2 advantage at 4:51 of the middle frame. Prout expanded Columbus’ lead to 4-2 at 6:28, an advantage the Blue Jackets wouldn’t give back.
The trio of Johansen, Atkinson and Kubalik combined for three goals and four assists for seven points on the night.
Adam Payerl and Oliver Gabriel added insurance goals for Columbus in the third period. The Blue Jackets were 1-2 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.
