GUEST LIST GROWS FOR OPENING NIGHT
Springfield, MA – The Springfield Falcons, proud members of the American Hockey League, announced today that former Springfield hockey players Rob DiMaio, Kay Whitmore and Michel Picard will be part of the Springfield Hockey Heritage Night on Saturday, October 15 when the Falcons honor the 1989-90 and 1990-91 Calder Cup championship teams at the MassMutual Center.
DiMaio, Whitmore and Picard join former Springfield head coach Jim Roberts and former radio play-by-play broadcaster John Forslund as special honorary guests the Falcons will be hosting as part of their special home opener festivities.
DiMaio captained Springfield to the 1989-90 Calder Cup championship in his second full season of professional hockey. The Calgary, Alberta native collected a total of 38 goals and 45 assists for 83 points in 94 career games in Springfield from 1988-1990. DiMaio went on to play in 894 career National Hockey League contests splitting time between the NY Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins, NY Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars.
Whitmore helped backbone the 1990-91 Springfield Calder Cup championship team as he was named the Jack A. Butterfield Award Winner in 1991, given annually to the Calder Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player. The Sudbury, Ontario native posted a record of 22-9-1 in 33 games with Springfield during the 1990-91 campaign.
Picard had a season to remember during the 1990-91 campaign leading Springfield in scoring with 56 goals and 40 assists for 96 points in 77 games. The Beauport, Quebec native still holds the Springfield hockey record for most goals in a regular season with the 56 markers. In 117 games with Springfield, Picard collected 77 goals and 57 assists for 134 points from 1990-1992.
