FALCONS BEAT PIRATES 2-1

By:  Sean Seifert

October 4, 2011 – The Springfield Falcons snapped their five-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon, ousting the Portland Pirates by a 2-1 decision at the MassMutual Center. The teams’ leaders rose to the occasion with Dane Byers and Alexandre Giroux each scoring, along with Manny Legace posting 17 saves on 18 shots.

Falcons head coach Rob Riley says another loss wasn’t an option. “Tonight was a really desperate game for us; we had to get a win,” said Riley.

Falcons’ captain Byers and goaltender Legace assured their team a lead after one period of play. Andrew Joudrey fed Byers for a shorthanded breakaway at 13:25, leading to Byers’ third goal in two games. Legace calmly turned aside 10 shots on goal to leave the Falcons with a 1-0 advantage after the first period.

In the second period, the Falcons saw a slew of scoring changes, capitalizing late in the period to maintain their lead. Brett MacLean was able to slide a loose puck past Legace at 3:25 to tie the game for Portland at 1-1. At 14:56 a sprinting Brock Trotter collided into Legace, sending the goaltender to the ice. Legace returned to his feet and held the Pirates for the remainder of the period.

With the second period ready to expire, Martin St. Pierre pivoted a backhand pass through the crease, connecting with Giroux who lit the lamp at 19:45 to give the Falcons a 2-1 hold on the game after 40 minutes.

During the first minute of the third period, Allen York replaced a still shaken up Legace in net. The Falcons held off the Pirates for the rest of the game, coming out on top with a much needed 2-1 victory.

Left wing Matt Calvert was awarded the third star of the game for his efforts towards the win.

“We found a way to win and that was really good to see. A lot of great efforts tonight,” said Riley.

The Falcons return to action next Saturday night for a 7 o’clock game against the Manchester Monarchs at the MassMutual Center.
