FALCONS FALL TO PENGUINS 5-3
March 25, 2012 - The Springfield Falcons dropped a 5-3 decision to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Falcons had a 3-1 lead in this game, but the Penguins answered back with four unanswered goals to earn the victory. The Falcons are now 31-31-3-3 on the season.
The afternoon started out strong for the Falcons as Matt Calvert opened the scoring at 6:13 of the first period when he tallied his 16th marker on the year extending his scoring streak to six games. The Penguins battled right back and evened the score at 1-1 when Jason Williams scored his 11th goal on the campaign at 9:40 of the first period.
In the second period, the Falcons regained their one goal advantage at 2:33 of the middle frame when Alexandre Giroux recorded his 24th goal of the year giving Springfield a 2-1 edge. For Giroux, it marked his 700th career point, becoming the 23rd player in AHL history with 700 career points. The goal, the 364th of Giroux's AHL career, moved the Quebec City native into a tie with AHL Hall of Famer Mitch Lamoureux for seventh place on the league's all-time list.
The Falcons continued their momentum later in the second period when Dane Byers tallied his 15th goal of the year at 6:50 of the middle frame putting the Birds on top 3-1. For Byers, it was his 100th career goal, 99 in the AHL. Byers' goal came shortly after Maksim Mayorov was awarded a penalty shot, but was stopped by Wilkes-Barre netminder Patrick Killeen.
With the Falcons in control, the Penguins started their comeback at 11:55 of the second period when Bryan Lerg knocked home his 24th marker of the year cutting Wilkes-Barre's deficit to 3-2 through 40 minutes of play.
In the third period, Brian Gibbons tied the score at 3-3 just 2:11 into the final frame, followed by Alex Grant giving the Penguins their first lead of the night at 7:39 of the final session.
Wilkes-Barre added an empty net goal in the game's final seconds concluding the scoring for the afternoon.
