The Springfield Falcons announced Thursday that the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team’s NHL affiliate, have acquired forward Paul Thompson from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Spencer Machacek. Thompson has been loaned to the Falcons.
Thompson, 25, has totaled 64 points (35 goals, 29 assists) in 170 career AHL games, all with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In 39 games this season, the Derry, New Hampshire native has amassed seven points (four goals, three assists), 50 penalty minutes and a -8 rating.
Before beginning his professional career, Thompson played four season at the University of New Hampshire from 2007-2011. He was named Hockey East’s Player of the Year in 2010-11, leading the conference in scoring with 52 points (28 goals, 24 assists) in 39 games.
Machacek, 25, has recorded 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) in 34 games with the Falcons this season. In 393 career AHL games, the Lethbridge, Alberta native has totaled 258 points (107 goals, 151 assists). In 25 career NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets and Atlanta Thrashers, he has notched nine points (two goals, seven assists). Machacek was acquired by Columbus via a trade with Winnipeg March 10, 2013 in exchange for forward Thomas Kubalik.
The Falcons are back in action at the MassMutual Center Friday, February 7, hosting the Syracuse Crunch at 7:00 p.m. New England linebacker Jerod Mayo will be in attendance to sign autographs for fans on the concourse.
