Student Prince Cafe and Fort Restaurant present Throwback Thursday: Jeff Daniels
Jeff Daniels played two seasons with the Springfield Falcons from 1995-1997 and, in 110 games, totaled 74 points, 40 goals, 34 assists, 51 penalty minutes and a +19 rating. The Oshawa, Ontario native notched four shorthanded goals with the Falcons, tying the franchise record with five others: Andrew Joudrey, Matt Calvert, Jason Japers, Norm Milley and Erik Westrum.
Daniels joined the Falcons for 1995-96 campaign after spending the first seven years of his pro career split between the IHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks, Cleveland Lumberjacks and Detroit Vipers and the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers. In his first season in Springfield, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound winger amassed 42 points (22 goals, 20 assists), 32 penalty minutes and a +16 rating in 72 games. The following season, Daniels registered 32 points (18 goals, 14 assists), 19 penalty minutes and a +3 rating in only 38 games with the club. He also appeared in 10 games with the NHL’s Hartford Whalers, recording two assists and a +2 rating.
A product of the Oshawa Generals of the OHL, Daniels played in 26 playoff games in his two years with the Falcons and notched 13 points (10 goals, three assists). His seven goals during the 1997 AHL playoffs ranked second on the club behind only Kevin Brown’s 11.
After his time in Springfield, Daniels went on to appear in games for the AHL’s New Haven Beast, the IHL’s Milwaukee Admirals and the NHL’s Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes. He finished his career with four seasons in Carolina and became an assistant coach with the club a season later. Daniels spent four seasons as an assistant in Carolina, two as the head coach of the AHL’s Albany River Rats, and is currently the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers. This is his fourth season behind the bench for Charlotte.
