The Springfield Falcons (21-5-1-3) earned three of a possible six points last week. After earning three points out of Thursday and Saturday’s contests, the team was defeated in regulation by the Providence Bruins Sunday afternoon, halting a franchise-record, nine-game point streak. Springfield still maintains the best points percentage in the American Hockey League (.767) and trails the Manchester Monarchs for the top spot in the Eastern Conference by only three points with four games in hand.
The Falcons look to extend their lead in the Northeast Division with three games this week. Tuesday, Springfield hosts the St. John’s IceCaps for a New Year’s Eve matinee. The contest begins at 3:00 p.m. and tickets are only $10. The Falcons then visit the Albany Devils at the Times Union Center Friday night before hosting Providence again at the MassMutual Center Saturday.

The Falcons earned a point versus the Phantoms Thursday night, falling after nine rounds of the shootout on Kyle Flanagan’s shootout winner. Springfield fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the second period to force overtime behind scores from Andrew Joudrey and Spencer Machacek. Jeremy Smith made 26 saves on 28 shots in net for the Falcons, while also stopping seven of nine shootout attempts.

Springfield matched a franchise-record, nine-game point streak with a 6-3 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Saturday night. The team matched a season-high three goals in a period twice in the game, tallying three scores in the second and the third period. Five Falcons finished with multiple points in the contest, led by forward Jonathan Marchessault who found the back of the net twice and assisted on another score. Patrick McNeill also recorded three points, scoring on a slap shot from the left-wing point early in the third period and assisting on two other goals. Blake Parlett (goal, assist), Spencer Machacek (two assists) and Tim Miller (two assists) were the other three Falcons to post multi-point efforts.

Springfield had its nine-game point streak snapped Sunday afternoon, falling to the Providence Bruins by the final score of 5-4. The Falcons fought back from a two-goal deficit twice in the contest, eliminating 2-0 and 4-2 Providence leads. With two goals in the game, defenseman Frederic St. Denis ranks second on the team with 20 points and eight goals, and leads the club with a +11 rating. Anthony Camara’s goal with 5:23 left in regulation gave Providence the victory, it’s first over Springfield in regulation this season.

Saturday, the Falcons defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to extend their point streak to nine games. The streak, which lasted from December 7 to December 28, matched a franchise record, set originally October 19, 1996 to November 16, 1996. The team equaled the streak the next season from March 6, 1998 to March 28, 1998. The Falcons went 7-0-0-2 over the recent nine-game streak, which ended Sunday.
The Falcons maintain first place in the AHL’s Northeast Division with a 21-5-1-3 record, having earned 46 of a possible 60 points. The team’s 46 points rank second in the Eastern Conference and its .767 points percentage leads the entire American Hockey League. Springfield trails Manchester by three points for the top spot in the Eastern Conference but has four games in hand on the Monarchs.
The Falcons announced Sunday morning that Ryan Craig was recalled by the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team’s NHL affiliate. Sunday evening, Craig was officially reassigned to Springfield but then recalled once again Monday morning. The Abbotsford, British Columbia native has appeared in three game with Columbus this season. In 21 games with the Falcons, Craig has totaled 12 points (six goals, six assists) and a +6 rating.
Springfield recalled forward Jeremy Langlois Sunday morning from the Evansville IceMen of the East Coast Hockey League. In 19 games with Evansville, Langlois has posted a team-high 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists). He has yet to record an AHL point in four games with the Falcons this season.
For Springfield, scoring early has been a strong sign of success. The Falcons have scored the first goal of the game 17 times in 30 games so far this season, and in those 17 games, Springfield is 15-1-0-1. The team has also posted a sparkling 12-0-1-0 mark when leading after one period of play. 
Jonathan Marchessault has heated up over the last month, totaling an AHL-best 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 11 December contests. Over that span, he has notched four multi-point efforts, scored three game-winning goals and has only been held without a point in two of the 11 games. Marchessault now leads the team in points (25), goals (11), assists (14), power-play goals (6) and game-winning goals (4). The Falcons are 7-2-0-2 in December.

The Falcons will hold the ‘Meet the Team’ event, presented by Webster Bank, at Q Pin 2’s in West Springfield Wednesday, January 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The entire team will be present to greet and play pool with fans in attendance.
