Student Prince Cafe and Fort Restaurant present Throwback Thursday: Jason McBain

Jason McBain has an impactful presence in the Springfield Falcons record books, ranking 10th all-time in games played (208), seventh in assists (87), ninth in points (122) and sixth in power-play goals (20). One of the original Falcons, McBain began his pro career with the club in 1994-95, finishing the season fifth on the team with 44 points (16 goals, 28 assists) in 77 games. The Falcons failed to earn a playoff spot in their first season, but McBain would help the team reach the postseason in each of the next two years.

In 1995-96, the Kimberley, British Columbia native matched his previous season’s total with 44 points, scoring 11 goals and assisting on 33 others. The Falcons won the Northern Division with a 42-22-11-5 record and a franchise-best 100 points, and advanced to the second round of the postseason. In eight playoff games, McBain notched two points (one goal, one assist) and two penalty minutes.

In his final season with Springfield, McBain notched 34 points (eight goals, 26 assists), 40 penalty minutes and a +15 rating in 58 games in 1996-97. The team finished the regular season second in the New England Division with a record of 41-25-12-2, but advanced to the conference finals, further than any other team in franchise history. In 16 playoff games during the team’s run, McBain totaled eight assists and 12 penalty minutes.

After the 1996-97 campaign, McBain went on to play for the Clevenland Lumberjacks of the International Hockey League in 1997-98 for one season. Never playing more than one year for any other club in his career, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman also spent time with the IHL’s Las Vegas Thunder and Grand Rapids Griffins, as well as the AHL’s Providence Bruins and Quebec Citadelles. After a two-year stint in Europe with Sweden’s Skelleftea AIK and Germany’s Revier Lions, McBain returned to the United States to play for the West Coast Hockey League’s Fresno Falcons in 2002-03. He finished his career playing two seasons for the ECHL’s Las Vegas Wranglers from 2003-2005.

Over his career, McBain played in nine NHL games, all with the Hartford Whalers through the Falcons’ affiliation. He was selected by the Whalers in the fourth round (81st overall) in 1992 NHL Draft.
