The Springfield Falcons (33-16-1-4) were defeated by the Hartford Wolf Pack by the final score of 4-3 Saturday night at the MassMutual Center, allowing three unanswered goals in the third period to drop the third straight meeting between the two division rivals.
Hartford got third-period scores from T.J. Hensick at 5:17, Marek Hrivik at 7:43 and Andrew Yogan at 8:14, eliminating a two-goal Springfield lead. For Yogan, it was his fourth goal of the season, all of which served as game-winning goals.
The Falcons held a 3-1 lead after two periods of play. Ryan Craig scored his eighth goal of the season at 13:42 of the first period, giving Springfield an early 1-0 edge. After Hartford’s Kyle Beach evened the score at 7:32 of the second period, Jean-Francois Jacques notched a power-play goal at the 11:49 mark of the middle frame to put the Falcons back on top, 2-1. For Jacques, the goal was his ninth of the season and fourth in his last eight games.
Springfield extended its lead to 3-1 at 16:53 of the second period, as Austin Madaisky fired a slap shot from the right-wing point that beat Hartford netminder David LeNeveu.
Tim Erixon registered an assist in the contest, extending his point streak to four games. The 6-foot-3, 199-pound defenseman has totaled five points (one goal, four assists) over that span.
Goaltender Mike McKenna made 19 saves on 23 shots in net for the Falcons, falling to 15-7-0 this season. LeNeveu stopped 28 of 31 shots for the Wolf Pack en route to his fourth victory of the 2013-14 campaign.
Springfield went 1-for-2 on the power play, while holding Hartford scoreless on two opportunities with the man advantage.
The Falcons are back in action at the MassMutual Center Sunday, February 23 to host the Norfolk Admirals at 3:00 p.m. Stanley Cup champion Gregory Campbell will sign autographs for fans on the concourse from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
