Erik Westrum began his professional career with the Springfield Falcons, playing his first three seasons with the organization. In 199 games with Springfield, Westrum totaled 106 points (37 goals, 69 assists), 272 penalty minutes and a -16 rating.
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Westrum played four years at the University of Minnesota, where he amassed 168 points (69 goals, 99 assists) in 161 games. He led the team in goals (27) his junior season in 1999-2000, while registering the most goals (26) and points (61) his senior season in 2000-01.
Westrum went on to play in 27 games at the NHL level. Making appearances with the Phoenix Coyotes, Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs, the 6-foot, 204-pound centerman notched three points (one goal, two assists) and 22 penalty minutes.
He also made AHL appearances with the Utah Grizzlies, Houston Aeros and Toronto Marlies before finishing his pro career in Switzerland. Westrum totaled a career-high 98 points, 34 goals, 64 assists, 138 penalty minutes and a +11 rating in 2005-06 with the Aeros.
In 2007-08, Westrum began playing abroad with Ambri-Piotta of the Switzerland National League A. Leading the team in goals in 2007-08 and 2008-09, he finished his career there after appearing in eight games in 2011-12.
Westrum, in three seasons with the Falcons, ranks tied for second on the team’s all-time shorthanded goals list behind only Andrew Joudrey, who scored his fifth Sunday during a 9-3 win at the Portland Pirates. Westrum scored four in his career, as did Matt Calvert, Jeff Daniels, Jason Jaspers and Norm Milley.
