In preparation for the Springfield Falcons’ 20th anniversary season in 2013-14, the team unveiled its commemorative logo Tuesday. The season opener is set for Saturday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. versus the Manchester Monarchs.
The Falcons began play in the American Hockey League in 1994, kicking off its inaugural season September 30 with a 5-3 win over the Worcester Sharks at the Springfield Civic Center. Springfield failed to make the playoffs in its first season but did qualify for the postseason each of the next five years, including two division championships (1995-96, 1997-98).
Entering the 2013-14 season, the Falcons are the reigning Northeast Division champions, having tied the franchise record with 45 wins in 2012-13 – only the second year since the AHL moved from an 80-game to a 76-game, regular-season schedule. Last season also marked the highest winning percentage (.651) in franchise history as well as the fewest number of goals allowed (186) in a single season.
The commemorative 20th anniversary logo will be used in a variety of ways over the course of the season, including its use on limited-edition merchandise.
